Forward Thinking

Landscape design is challenging, from an artistic, environmental, architectural, engineering, and horticultural viewpoint. Landscapes are not static, they are dynamic and constantly evolving. Indeed, a successful, well thought out landscape is a natural and man-made eco-system requiring careful thought and consideration on a variety of levels and involves several interdependent factors:

  • Plant selection: Color, shape, and attractiveness are considered as well as utility, sun exposure, optimum growing conditions, size and growth patterns, and potential for disease.
  • Soil type and capability: Water permeability, absorption, and percolation; Ph and type of soil (clay, sand, loam, silt, or combination).
  • Climate, elevation, and topography: Growing zones; seasonal temperature patterns and fluctuations are taken into consideration as is type of climate (arid, coastal, tropical, mountain, etc.), and the topography of your yard (flat, rolling, slope, or hillside).
  • Drainage and irrigation: Marvin will check for the existence and extent of subsurface water (groundwater) and any collection (pools) or runoff of surface water away from the property (drainage). He will determine whether existing systems are effective or will need to be modified based on the type of landscape installed.
  • Space: Dictates the type and size of plants and either limits or expands landscape options. A space can be small, cozy, and private, or large and encompassing for use in both social and family entertainment.
  • Lifestyle & budget: Landscapes are created to suit budget and lifestyle, from basic to sublime, small to large. Lifestyle includes the client’s commitment to regular maintenance or whether maintenance will be outsourced.
